Double Parsha Behar-Bechuktai: Day #3 (Leviticus 25:29-38) (Study Notes)

In the first part of this daily portion, we continue to learn about the sale of Jewish property or possessions. In our previous portion, we discussed the sale of ones possession when a person is in dire straits. In today's portion we begin by discussing the sale of Jewish personal property. We will end with what to do when a Jew has to sell his or herself into slavery (preferably to a fellow Jew).

The first part of our study examines the sale of houses that are in walled cities. (Leviticus 25:19)

HaKadosh Baruch Hu opens today’s portion by reiterating a promised blessing that He will provide if His Jewish people will keep our vows when we are in the Holy Promised Land. The promise proclaimed by HaKadosh Baruch Hu:

“The land will yield its fruits and you will eat your fill, and you will live upon it in security.”

Double Parsha: Behar-Bechukotai

Day#1: Leviticus 25:8-18

(Part 2-Study Notes)

(Leviticus 25:8-10)

HaKadosh Baruch Hu then commands that we are to count off 7 weeks of years. This Is a fancy way of saying 7 x 7 years, which equals 49 years.

In the 7th month (Tishrei), we shall sound the horn. If you recall from last week’s parsha study, this is likely the celebration of Rosh Hashanah On the 1st of the month, which would be the start of the 50th year. Again, Rosh Hashanah starts a calendar year, but not the festival year.

Leviticus Chapter 25

Behar

Day 2: Leviticus 25:19-28

19 And the land shall yield her fruit, and ye shall eat until ye have enough, and dwell therein in safety.

20 And if ye shall say: ‘What shall we eat the seventh year? behold, we may not sow, nor gather in our increase’;

Day 3: Leviticus 25:29-38

29 And if a man sell a dwelling-house in a walled city, then he may redeem it within a whole year after it is sold; for a full year shall he have the right of redemption.

30 And if it be not redeemed within the space of a full year, then the house that is in the walled city shall be made sure in perpetuity to him that bought it, throughout his generations; it shall not go out in the jubilee.
