You Say You Are Not a Sinner?
A Poem of Praise
by Kimberly Davis
You say you are not a sinner—By another’s merit you are justified.
But, let’s look at your sin and depravity
Through the lens of Hashem’s Holy eyes:
Have you ever told a little fib?
(Yes, both small and large fit the bill).
Have you ever used Hashem’s name in vain?
(For that alone you will be killed).
Have you ever hated a friend or foe?
(In your heart or aloud with your lips)
Have you ever disobeyed your parents?
(As an adult or when you were a kid)
Have you ever committed adultery?
(Serving another god still counts here too)
Have you ever coveted what another has?
(Jealous because “surely, the same is due” to you!)
Have you ever stolen anything?
(A penny or a whole bank is the same).
Have you ever sought out vengeance?
(Either in deed or imagined in vain?)
Do you believe in a god that’s not Hashem?
(The One True G-d who has no form).
Can your god be crafted into an image?
(Of man, beast, or nature, any form does your god adorn?)
If you said yes to any of the sins above,
You’ve committed High Treason against the Almighty King.
So, indeed, you are a sinner, and a sacrifice you must bring.
The penalty for your deeds are curses of suffering, disease, and pain; exile from the Holy Land, and the withholding of all rains.
But now, I tell you the Good News:
That your crimes and punishment can be erased.
If only you confess your sin with sorrow
And return to Hashem and seek His grace.
For, Hashem has given His Torah to decree how we should live.
When kept, it’s the key to blessing which from His storehouse, Hashem will give.
But when we stray,
we dishonor the covenant, that
He gave to us in love.
But to those of Joseph who will repent--
He, the Redeemer, is promised to come.
All it takes is to bow to Hashem’s glory.
Humbly confess with sorrow, your sin.
Tell Hashem you’re in need of Him as your Savior, then surrender your life and abide in Him.
Am Yisrael Chai!
